Pirates home in on mark not seen since Bonds' days
The Pittsburgh Pirates are streaking. They've won eight of 10 to move to 74-48 on the season and just 3.5 games back of the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals.
The Pirates would be leading every other division in baseball except the AL Central where they'd be locked in a virtual dead heat with the Kansas City Royals.
Pittsburgh is headed toward its third consecutive postseason after toiling for two decades of low payrolls and inept management.
Now the Pirates are on the verge of recapturing even more of their wonderful history. With a win tonight against the struggling Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh will move 27 games over .500 for the first time 1992, one three MVP seasons for a rather slender Pittsburgh outfielder name Barry Bonds.
The Pirates, meanwhile, will be scoreboard watching late into the night with the Cardinals playing at the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have won four in a row to climb back over .500.
In 1992, the Pirates played in the franchise's last World Series, heartbreakingly losing in seven games to Sid Bream and the Atlanta Braves.
