Pirates draft results just a coincidence

Published Jun. 11, 2015 5:03 p.m. ET

When looking back on the Pirates draft, it looks like the team targeted both shortstops and college players in general, but General Manager Neal Huntington said that was not the case.

“It’s no specific effort on our part to draft shortstops,” Huntington told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It is great to have depth at premium defensive positions, especially if they’re offensive as well.”

The Pirates drafted a shortstop in each of the first two rounds and used 10 of their first 11 picks on collegiate athletes.
