Phillips suffers hairline fracture in left hand

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 2:07 p.m. ET

MIAMI (AP) Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was hit by a pitch on the left hand and X-rays revealed he sustained a hairline fracture.

Phillips was hit by a pitch thrown by Jose Fernandez in the top of the seventh inning in the Reds' 3-1 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night.

Phillips initially stayed in the game before being taken out in the bottom of the eighth in favor of Jose Peraza.

''It wasn't good enough to stay in the game,'' Reds manager Bryan Price said. ''It was real sore. We'll have to see where he is tomorrow with a lot of ice and time to sleep and get the swelling down.''

Phillips is hitting .256 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 80 games this season.
