Klentak had been an assistant GM with the Los Angeles Angels. On Friday, the Angels also lost assistant GMs Scott Servais and Tim Bogar. Servais is the Seattle Mariners' new manager, and Bogar is expected to be his bench coach.
Klentak replaces Ruben Amaro Jr., who was dismissed by the Phillies on Sept. 10. Scott Proefrock had been serving as the team's interim GM.
The Phillies finished with the majors' worst record (63-99) this season and are in a rebuilding phase after dealing multiple key veteran players -- including Cole Hamels, Chase Utley and Jonathan Papelbon -- this past summer.
