Phillies re-sign veteran righty Contreras

The Phillies signed right-hander Jose Contreras to a two-year contract with a club option for 2013, FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi reported on his Twitter feed. The deal guarantees Contreras $5.5 million and includes performance bonuses.

Contreras, 38, went 6-4 with four saves and a 3.34 ERA in 67 games in 2010 for the Phillies. He averaged 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings, and the saves were the first of his career. In the postseason, Contreras went 1-0 with four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

"Jose was as consistent a reliever as we had last year," Amaro said. "We were pleasantly surprised by his durability since it was his first full year in a relief role. Jose has fit in extremely well in our clubhouse, and he is a quality, back-end of the bullpen pitcher who showed versatility in a variety of roles in 2010. We’re pleased to have him on board for the next couple of years."

In his major league career, Contreras is 77-67 with four saves and a 4.55 ERA in 258 games for the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies and Phillies. In 18 career playoff games, the righty is 4-3 with a 3.49 ERA.
