Phillies draft outfielder with first pick overall in Rule 5 draft
The Philadelphia Phillies are in rebuild mode under new general manager Matt Klentak. One of the cheapest ways to build a farm system is through the Rule 5 draft, which took place Thursday.
With the first overall selection, the Phillies selected outfielder Tyler Goeddel, an outfielder from Tampa Bay:
With their second (and last) selection, they took lefty Daniel Stumpf from Kansas City:

Goeddel, as you can see from the image above, is a solid hitter, but could most effectively be used as a platoon. The 23-year-old was drafted in the first round in 2011 out of a California high school.

Stumpf, 24, also owned solid splits in 2015, pitching to a 2.32 ERA while striking out 40 in 31 innings pitched against lefties.
You can read a full breakdown of the Rule 5 draft here, but the brief rundown is this: teams select from a pool of players that have been in the minors for four (or five if signed/drafted under 18 years old) years and have not been protected on their team's 40-man roster. They must be placed on the selecting team's 40-man roster and must remain there for the entire next season. If they are removed from the roster, they're offered back to their original team for $25,000 before being passed through waivers.
