Phillies C Schneider injures left thumb

Published Jul. 2, 2010 2:21 a.m. ET

Brian Schneider of the Phillies hyperextended his left thumb during a game in Pittsburgh, making him the second Philadelphia catcher to be injured in less than two weeks.

Trainers examined Schneider's hand while the Pirates were batting during the second inning Thursday night. Schneider, making his 21st start of the season, was lifted before he would have batted in the fourth inning. There was no initial estimate how long he might be out.

The Phillies already have seven players on the disabled list, including star second baseman Chase Utley with an injured right thumb and starting catcher Carlos Ruiz with a concussion. Ruiz has been out since June 19.
