Jamie Moyer bolstered his bid to win Philadelphia's fifth starter spot by giving up one hit over 6 2-3 innings in the Phillies' 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

The 47-year-old left-hander is competing with Kyle Kendrick, who has a 1.37 ERA in 19 2-3 innings over five games. Moyer struck out six and hit one batter with a pitch.

``Pretty good,'' Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said. ``Threw good quality strikes down. Even when he missed, he was close. Got a little yo-yo on it every now and then. Back door. Up and down.''

Moyer underwent two major offseason surgeries. He had a sports hernia operation in October and underwent another procedure on his left knee in January.

``I really didn't know what to expect because I haven't been through his kind of thing in the past,'' Moyer said. ``So, go wing it and see what happens. Being in this clubhouse with this group of guys, it's a winning environment, it's a winning situation. It's really hard to walk away from.''

The lone hit off Moyer was a one-out single by Marcus Thames in the first.

Phil Hughes allowed one run and two hits in three-plus innings one day after becoming the Yankees' No. 5 starter. The 23-year-old struck out five and walked four during a 71-pitch outing.

Yankees star Alex Rodriguez went 0 for 3. His meeting Friday with federal investigators probing a Canadian doctor was delayed, and the slugger remained at spring training rather than traveling to Buffalo.

``They're working on it,'' Rodriguez said. ``Whether I talked to them today or next week, it will be done and hopefully it will be done before opening day and we can move on.''

Hughes started on three days' rest with New York lining up its rotation for the regular season. He worked out of a base-loaded, two-out jam in the second by striking out Jimmy Rollins.

``He didn't throw a ton of pitches (in Monday's outing),'' manager Joe Girardi said.

CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte are set to start in the season-opening three-game series at Boston that begins April 4.

Hughes will be on an innings-limit this season, possibly around 170.

``We're starting to map it out,'' Girardi said. ``We'll continue to map it out.''

New York closer Mariano Rivera struck out one during a perfect sixth. The right-hander has not given up a run in four innings overall.

Shane Victorino had a two-run double in the eighth for the Phillies.

NOTES: Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain, who lost out to Hughes in the fifth starter competition, will pitch out of the bullpen on Saturday. Chamberlain said he is ``embracing'' the relief role and is in the mix to be the eighth-inning setup man for Rivera. ... New York general manager Brian Cashman feels Chamberlain can be successful as a starter or reliever and that people who feel the right-hander is a failed starter are making ``an inaccurate read.'' ... Phillies LF Raul Ibanez, who entered 4 for 40, drew a pair of walks from Hughes. He grounded out against Rivera before getting hit on the right arm by a pitch two innings later. ... The Yankees sent RHP Amaury Sanit to their minor league camp. .. New York C Francisco Cervelli will miss a couple days due to a family matter.
