Padres' Tyson Ross throws a lot of sliders

Tyson Ross tends to use his slider…a lot. He thew it 276 more times than any other pitcher last year. Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley doesn’t think he’s over-relying on it though, according to U-T San Diego:

“I’ll tell you why I don’t get concerned with him – he still throws 60 percent fastballs,” Balsley said this spring. “The major league average is anywhere from 55 to 60. If he had a curveball and threw 20 percent curves and 20 percent sliders, he’d still be throwing 40 percent breaking balls, which a lot of guys do…”

Although hitters definitely see the slider a lot, they’re obviously not seeing it well. He has a 55 percent swing-and-miss rate on the slider which is tied for the most this year for starters who have thrown at least 20 sliders.
