Padres RHP Wieland to have Tommy John surgery

Published Jul. 17, 2012 9:11 p.m. ET

The Padres say right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Wieland has been on the disabled list since May 10 with the injury and is expected to have the operation within a few weeks.

Wieland had been rehabbing his elbow in Arizona and expected to make a return later this month before he had a setback while throwing off a bullpen mound. His elbow was then examined further before the determination to have surgery was made.

''We think medically, he went through all the right processes to get to this point,'' manager Bud Black said. ''He was feeling good along the way, he was throwing. I think it just got to the point when the intensity picked up, the pain reoccurred.''

Wieland made his major league debut with the Padres on April 14 in Los Angeles and made five starts before being sidelined. He went 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA and became the second Padres starting pitcher to require Tommy John surgery this season. Left-hander Cory Luebke had the same surgery in May.
