Padres: Myers up for 2016 Hank Aaron Award, Voting Continues
The Hank Aaron Award is given each year to the top offensive player in each league. This year, the Padres have Wil Myers as their finalist.
It was a special year for San Diego Padres‘ outfielder and first baseman Wil Myers. Pounding out a career high 155 hits in 157 games, the 25-year-old proved to fans that he is a budding offensive superstar. Now, as the accolades continue to mount, Myers is up for one of the league’s most coveted award, the Hank Aaron Award.
This honor goes to the top player on offense in each league, decided by fan vote. There is a representative from each major league roster in the list of finalists, including some very formidable opposition to Myers.
In 2016, Myers proved his worth to the organization, and provided fans with hope for the future. He did this to the tune of a career high 28 home runs, 94 RBI, and 29 doubles. Surprisingly, he also stole 28 bases, more than he swiped in his first three seasons combined.
Still, it will take a strong force of Padres’ fans and other supporters of Myers to make this happen. With the likes of Kris Bryant, Yoenis Céspedes, and Ryan Braun in the mix, it won’t be easy for Myers, even with the incredible season he has had.

Past winners include the legendary Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds, as well as former Padre Matt Kemp. Last year, young Nationals’ sensation Bryce Harper took home the award.

The award used to be chosen personally by Hank Aaron, but is now voted for by fans. With a fan vote, many will overlook the Padres due to their lack of success in 2016, serving as an unfair disadvantage for Myers. Due to this, as well as the other extremely impressive offensive stars in the national league, Myers is considered an underdog.
Regardless, Myers has amazed many in 2016. The offensive juggernaut has provided a bright spot even in a last place finish in the NL West, opening many eyes outside of the organization. Moving forward, he appears to be a staple of the organization, and has established himself as one of the most critical pieces to the current rebuilding process.
Voting for the award ends on Friday, October 14th, at 9 PM PT. Fans can vote up to ten times each day.
