Padres' Hedges picks up first hit in catching debut

Published May. 7, 2015 12:43 a.m. ET

Padres rookie catcher Austin Hedges had himself a solid debut in his first game behind the plate. His first big league single was good for his career RBI. He later picked up another RBI on a sacrifice fly. The 22-year-old became the youngest Padres starting catcher since Ben Davis in 1999.

Of course, the catcher was not necessarily focused on his hitting, but on catching starter Ian Kennedy. "All I cared about going into the game was that Ian and I were on the same page and we go out and followed the game plan,” he said. Kennedy was complimentary of the rookie after the game.

To celebrate his accomplishments Hedges received a post-game shower of baby powder, beer and shaving cream from his teammates.
