•The idea of the Astros trading first baseman/DH Chris Carter is intriguing, given that Evan Gattis and Jonathan Singleton are potential duplications. But Gattis has been out since Sunday with right wrist discomfort and has spent time on the DL in each of the past two seasons. The Astros would be wise to proceed with caution.
•The Orioles are open to trading left-handed reliever Brian Matusz, but his $3.2 million salary and remaining year of arbitration likely will give prospective suitors pause. The Mets, who recently lost lefty Josh Edgin to Tommy John surgery, have scouted Matusz, according to the New York Post. The Orioles are willing to include cash in a deal, but the Mets may prefer other options, major-league sources say.
