New York Mets: Terry Collins Says 2017 May Be His Last Season

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

2016 was a wild season for the New York Mets. However, that wild ride may have taken it’s toll on their manager Terry Collins.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins is the oldest manager in the MLB at the age of 67. The constant travel and stress of being a manager is not an easy thing to deal with at that age, and it has seemingly taken its toll on Collins.

“I just need to reevaluate at the end of this coming year what’s going on, where I am, how I’m feeling,” Collins told Adam Rubin of ESPN.com. “I’ve always said a lot of it will be dictated by how I’m feeling. This was a tough year.”

Last season, Collins had to be hospitalized in June overnight after missing the series finale against the Brewers. The main thing that seems to have been getting to Collins is the vigorous travel that baseball teams have to go through.

“It takes a toll on everybody. You talk to the players. If you noticed, that [Labor Day game] was the day we gave everybody off because they were stinking beat. This travel is hard, especially with the late-night scheduling that is prevalent throughout baseball. There are so many night games where you’re traveling after the game and getting into towns at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning. And the next thing you know, if you ever have a day game pop up on you, it’s tough to do.”

While some fans will likely be excited to see Collins go, he has had success as the manager of the Mets. In six seasons, Collins is 10 games under .500 as a manager, but he certainly helped get the most out of some poor Mets teams early on in his career.

Furthermore, the Mets were able to reach the World Series in 2015 and shockingly made the playoffs in 2016 despite losing nearly their entire rotation. While credit will be giving to players for stepping up, Collins also deserves some credit for helping weather a few challenging times during the season.

If 2017 is indeed his last with the Mets, Collins can certainly hold his head high for a job well done in New York.
