Nationals 1B LaRoche headed to DL

Published May. 23, 2011 7:48 p.m. ET

Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche is headed to the 15-day disabled list because of a torn labrum in his sore left shoulder.

Manager Jim Riggleman says LaRoche's shoulder was examined again in New York and the team plans to let him rest for several weeks to try to get rid of the soreness and weakness he's felt.

LaRoche is hitting .172 with three homers and 15 RBIs with a current 1-for-29 slump. A corresponding roster move will happen on Tuesday, leaving the Nationals a player short for Monday night's game at Milwaukee.

The team is looking at several options, including the return of outfielder Rick Ankiel, who is rehabbing an injured right wrist. Michael Morse was in the starting lineup for LaRoche.
