MLB on FOX debuting mini camera

Published Jul. 6, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

One of the smallest devices in live TV will be used on baseball's biggest stage when MLB on FOX rolls out the latest technology for Tuesday's All-Star Game.

MLB on FOX, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, first used Diamond Cam, a miniature camera embedded into the infield, at the 2004 All-Star Game in Houston and again two years later in Pittsburgh.

An improved version developed by inertia Unlimited delivers sharper images transmitted from a camera only slightly larger than grains of infield soil. The cameras will be positioned in front of home plate and near first base for the 83rd All-Star Game in Kansas City.

The original cameras, with a lens about the size of a pencil eraser and were standard definition. Those cameras had to be hard-wired, which required digging trenches on the field.

The new cameras are high-definition and transmit via wireless technology. They are powered by a long-life lithium ion battery.
