Mets reliever Jeurys Familia to have elbow surgery

Mets reliever Jeurys Familia is scheduled for surgery Wednesday on his right elbow, sidelining a promising young arm in New York's struggling bullpen.

Familia is on the 15-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis and hasn't pitched since May 8. The team announced Tuesday that the rookie right-hander will have bone spurs and loose bodies removed at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek will perform the operation. There was no word on how long Familia is expected to be out.

The 23-year-old Familia has a 3.48 ERA and one save in eight games. He has struck out seven and walked seven in 10 1-3 innings.

Also, the Mets announced Monday that injured reliever Scott Atchison was examined in Florida by Dr. James Andrews because of continued discomfort in his right elbow. The club said Andrews concurred with Mets physicians that Atchison has a bone spur, and the right-hander would resume his throwing program once he returned to Port St. Lucie.

There was no timetable given for his return to the Mets.

Atchison has a 4.50 ERA in 19 appearances covering 18 innings.
