Mets prospect sidelined by back soreness

Published Feb. 29, 2012 2:24 p.m. ET

New York Mets infield prospect Reese Havens has been sidelined by a sore back and probably won't participate in spring training until the weekend.

Manager Terry Collins said Havens, a first-round draft pick in 2008, told him Tuesday that the back had been sore for a few days. Collins said the setback is frustrating for both the team and the 25-year-old Havens.

Havens hit .289 with six home runs and 26 RBIs in 58 games with Double-A Binghamton last season. He was the 22nd overall pick in 2008 after batting .359 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs as a junior at South Carolina.
