Mets place RHP Jenrry Mejia on DL

Published Aug. 18, 2013 3:59 p.m. ET

The Mets have placed right-hander Jenrry Mejia on the 15-day disabled list after he had to leave Saturday's start because he experienced pain in his surgically repaired elbow.

Mejia (1-2), who has 27 strikeouts and four walks in five starts over 27 1-3 innings this year, has been pitching with a bone spur in his elbow, and it had previously been determined that he would undergo offseason surgery. He had Tommy John surgery in 2011.

The Mets recalled reliever Greg Burke from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Mejia's place on the roster. Burke has made 10 relief appearances for New York this season and has 25 strikeouts in 29 innings.
