Mets place All-Star Reyes on DL
The New York Mets have placed All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes on the disabled list Thursday after his strained left hamstring did not sufficiently improve in the last few days.
The move will keep Reyes out at least until July 18 and possibly longer, leaving the Mets without their best player during a stretch that will likely determine the course of their season.
General manager Sandy Alderson said Wednesday the team's next 10 to 12 games will be critical in determining whether it will trade away players before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.
The Mets have won four straight games to improve to 45-42 but remain six-and-a-half games back in the National League wild-card race.
If they are to make a case to be kept intact for the stretch run, the Mets will have to do so largely without their star shortstop. Reyes' injury was diagnosed Sunday as a Grade 1 hamstring strain, which left open the possibility that he could play this week.
But Alderson said Wednesday the injury had not improved to the point where Reyes could even test his leg by running, let alone play in a game. Given his history of leg injuries and how aggressively he runs the bases, the Mets are taking a conservative approach.
Reyes, 28, was in the midst of a career year. He leads the majors with a .354 batting average and 15 triples, and ranks second with 30 stolen bases.
