Mets GM Alderson has pre-planned surgery in cancer treatment

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 2:08 a.m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) Mets general manager Sandy Alderson says he had pre-planned surgery last week as part of his cancer treatment and that the procedure was ''fantastically successful.''

The 68-year-old hasn't revealed what kind of cancer he has, and said Tuesday that he would keep that information private.

Alderson spoke before New York hosted Washington. He said the surgery he had last Wednesday had been planned in December, and that he doesn't expect his illness to curtail his duties.

''I feel very well. I feel well in the context of probably requiring a couple of weeks for full recovery from a surgery,'' he said.

Alderson said no further surgery was scheduled.

Mets manager Terry Collins says he admires how Alderson has been able to carry on despite having cancer.

''I've never been around anybody who's fought it better,'' Collins said.
