PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) New York Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is headed to New York to have his left knee examined by team doctors.

Cabrera was injured in the first inning of Thursday's spring training game while he was running from first to second base and decided at the last second not to slide. He was taken out of the game a few pitches later.

He had an MRI on Thursday in Port St. Lucie and said Friday he was going to New York. The Mets have not announced the results of the scan.

Cabrera signed an $18.5 million, two-year deal with the Mets during the offseason as a free agent. Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada provide depth at shortstop.
