Mets 3B Wright cleared for baseball activities; OF Cuddyer goes on DL

The New York Mets figure to be in the market for some offense before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but also they might get some help from within the organization -- eventually.

And they need it.

The team placed left fielder Michael Cuddyer on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of the ongoing problems with his left knee. Limited to 49 games this season, Cuddyer is hitting .332 with 10 homers and 31 RBI. He has played in only four games -- playing the full nine innings just once -- since the All-Star break.

Meanwhile, third baseman David Wright, who has been sidelined since April 15 because of a back injury that later was diagnosed as spinal stenosis, has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

However, the team isn't offering much of a timetable for his return. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told the New York Daily News that he isn't sure when Wright will be ready for a rehab assignment but that he expects the third baseman to return this season.

In eight games this season, the seven-time All-Star is hitting .333 with a homer and two RBI.

To replace Cuddyer on the 25-man roster, New York promoted outfielder Michael Conforto from Double-A Binghamton. Conforto, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2014 draft, is hitting .297 with 12 homers and 54 RBI between Single-A and Double-A this season.

The Mets rank 29th in the majors and last in the NL with an average of 3.43 runs per game, and they are last in the majors with a .233 team batting average and a .357 slugging percentage.
