Melancon will remain the closer, despite struggles

Published Apr. 23, 2015 1:24 a.m. ET

Mark Melancon has struggled in the ninth inning, but Clint Hurdle isn't ready to remove him from the closer's role quite yet.

“For me it’d be an absolute overreaction, one blown save, to make a switch now,” Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Not only is Melancon struggling to get outs, but his velocity has been a topic of discussion recently. The closer hasn't been throwing as hard as people would expect, but Hurdle isn't worried about that and believes the velocity will come with time.

“Watson has spiked back up. Hughes has spiked back up,” Hurdle said. “From my experience, I’m thinking [Melancon is] a couple weeks behind, for whatever reason. I don't have an answer for why on that, nor does he.”
