Mariners going on Indiana shopping spree

Published Dec. 4, 2009 2:16 a.m. ET

Jack Zduriencik (zur-REN'-cik) has money to spend at baseball's winter meetings. The Mariners' general manager said Thursday, four days before the meetings begin in Indianapolis, that Seattle "certainly has needs to fill" for 2010. The contracts of veterans Adrian Beltre, Miguel Batista and Erik Bedard and others expired, freeing up perhaps $30 million. Zduriencik says his priorities are to determine whether he can get first baseman Russell Branyan re-signed while confirming he's past his back injury, and to upgrade the bullpen. The GM doesn't see any imminent trades brewing for the Mariners but says he is "going to go down every avenue" to improve the team. The Mariners posted an 85-77 record last season.
