Manny goes yard in first home game for Triple-A Cubs

In his first home game as a player-coach for the Iowa Cubs, Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday night.

Batting sixth as the designated hitter, Ramirez finished 3 for 4 in the Cubs’ 7-6, 10-inning win over Kansas City’s Triple-A farm team, the Omaha Storm Chasers. His seventh-inning homer, off right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon, cut the Cubs’ deficit to 4-2.

Following Kris Bryant’s grand slam, which gave the Cubs a 6-4 lead, Ramirez singled and was replaced by a pinch runner.

Ramirez made his Cubs’ Triple-A debut Thursday at Colorado Springs (Rockies) and went 0 for 4.

The 12-time All-Star, a .312 career hitter over 19 major-league seasons, is 14th on the all-time MLB home run list with 555, 18th in RBI with 1,831 and ranks ninth in slugging percentage at .585.

Suspended twice for violating baseball’s drug policy, once in 2009 and again in 2011, Ramirez last played in the majors on April 6, 2011, for the Tampa Bay Rays.

He played 17 games for the Oakland A’s Triple-A Sacramento River Cats in 2012, 49 games for the EDA Rhinos of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan in 2013, and 30 games for the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A Round Rock Express.
