Luna's RBI hit leads Phils over Jays

Another injury to an All-Star infielder left manager Charlie Manuel feeling a bit edgy.

Hector Luna's RBI single in the 10th inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies over a Toronto Blue Jays split squad 4-3 on Saturday.

The game was irrelevant, though.

The concern for Manuel was third baseman Placido Polanco left the game after injuring his left ring finger diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt. There was no immediate word on the results of Polanco's X-ray.

The Phillies are already missing Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. Howard is recovering from a torn Achilles and likely will miss at least the first two months. Utley, though, appears closer to returning after missing all of spring so far with a knee injury. He said he'd like to play in a game next week.

If Philadelphia has to play without any of their top players, Manuel doesn't want just anyone filling in.

''I don't want to hear `body' (nonsense),'' he said. ''I want somebody in here who can play. Like we talk about winning the World Series, getting to the playoffs and winning the World Series. I don't particularly like that. Don't say `body' to me. I not a mediocrity kind of guy.''

Freddy Galvis, a top prospect, could be in the mix to help in the infield. Galvis was ticketed to be the shortstop of the future, but former NL MVP Jimmy Rollins re-signed with the Phillies in the offseason.

Galvis hit a tying homer in the ninth against Toronto after Brian Bocock hit a go-ahead shot in the top half of the inning.

''Freddy is a good player,'' Manuel said. ''He doesn't make a whole lot of mistakes. He has a tremendous feel for the game, he has baseball instincts. And he's always where he's supposed to be. He's definitely getting better with the bat. His home run, that shows you he's getting stronger, but also it shows you when he stays back on his backside and puts a good swing on the ball, he can drive the ball far enough to score runs.''

J.P. Arencibia also hit a solo shot for Toronto. Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow allowed a run and five hits in 3 1-3 innings. Morrow had four strikeouts and has a spring ERA of 1.08.

''Maybe his fastball command wasn't what it has been his first couple of outings but he still made pitches,'' Jays manager John Farrell said of Morrow. ''He went out and used his curveball and changeup. Next time out, he will be fine.''

Jimmy Rollins hit a solo homer leading off the bottom of the first for Philadelphia. Vance Worley threw four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.

Worley, who wears glasses because he doesn't know how to put contact lenses in his eyes, lost the nose piece on his glasses on the mound.

''There was some panic,'' he said. ''They got a little steamy, but I got the last out and then got another pair.''

Jim Thome, a candidate to help replace Howard at first base, played four innings in a minor league game in his second appearance in the field this spring. The 41-year-old Thome had been scratched the last two days because of soreness. He made five routine putouts and was 0 for 2.

Thome has played only four games at first since 2005, so he has to get used to it again.

''The bending over that I just don't think I've done in five or six years, doing it pitch after pitch, my body has to get used to the motions of defense again,'' he said. ''It's coming along.''

NOTES: Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie has tightness in his left groin and is expected to miss a few games. Lawrie got hurt trying to score from second on a single during Friday's game against the Rays. ... Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless inning around two hits. ... Phillies RHP Jose Contreras will make his first appearance in a Grapefruit League game on Sunday. ... The Phillies wore green jerseys and caps as they normally do on St. Patrick's Day.
