Little slugger has a big-league heart
It's every player's worst nightmare. You take a big cut and the bat leaves your hands. Its destination now literally out of your hands, you just hope it avoids a fan. Especially a little one.
Kyle Seager lived that nightmare. And the little boy hit with the bat turned it into a story one could only dream of.
Shortly after last month's All-Star Game, Seager's Mariners were in Houston taking on the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Seager entered the game riding a 15-game hitting streak, and was without a hit in the game when he took a swing. The bat left his hands and landed on a boy named Lyle Raymond.
Luckily, Lyle was not hurt in the incident. But he likely brought tears to Seager's eyes nonetheless with what he did next. After the incident, Lyle gave the bat back to Seager, foregoing his option to keep it as a souvenir. Seager, who went 0 for 4 in the game to see his streak end, gave Lyle a thumbs up in the game, and that was that. Until something came in the mail for Seager.
Kyle's wife Julie shared the letter on Twitter:
Dear Mr. Seager,
My name is Lyle Raymond. Your bat landed on me. I am OK. Thanks for giving me the thumbs up when you were on first base. I like the Astros but will cheer you on too.
I gave back your bat because you had a big hitting streak with that bat. I hope you have more with that bat.
Your fan, Lyle
After Julie posted the letter on Twitter, one reply said Lyle should be getting some "Seager swag." Julie's reply: "He'll be getting some, no worries."
