Kubiak still mulling backup QB decision

Published Aug. 30, 2013 10:59 p.m. ET

Houston coach Gary Kubiak isn't ready to say who will back up quarterback Matt Schaub after T.J. Yates and Case Keenum both performed well this preseason.

Kubiak expects to make a decision on the spot by Thursday, which means he'll probably keep both quarterbacks on the roster.

The Texans have to trim their roster to 53 by Saturday afternoon.

Yates has been Schaub's backup for the last two seasons, and Keenum spent last year on the practice squad after a record-setting career at the University of Houston.

Kubiak loves the competition between the two because it has ''made them better and made our team better.''

Keenum threw for 128 yards and a score in the first half and Yates added 109 yards with another score in Thursday's 24-6 win over Dallas.
