Juan Pierre signs with Phils

Published Jan. 27, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

The Phillies added depth to their outfield Friday, signing free agent Juan Pierre to a minor-league contract.

There is no obvious spot for Pierre with the Phillies, who plan to use Hunter Pence in right, Shane Victorino in center and a Laynce Nix/John Mayberry platoon in left.

But Pierre, 34, protects the team in the event of injury, though the team also can turn to one of its top young players, Domonic Brown.

Pierre batted .279/.329/.327 with the White Sox last season, with two home runs and 50 RBIs in 711 plate appearances. He also was 27-for-44 in stolen-base attempts; his 17 caught stealings were the most in the majors.
