Joe Garagiola wins HOF's Buck O'Neil Award

Joe Garagiola is the winner of the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum gives the award to an individual for efforts to enhance baseball's positive impact on society. The 87-year-old Garagiola will receive the award July 26 as part of Hall of Fame weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Following a nine-year major league career that began in 1946, Garagiola had a long career in baseball broadcasting. He also founded The Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.) and the National Spit Tobacco Education Program.

Garagiola becomes the third winner of the lifetime achievement award, which was established in 2007.

O'Neil, a Negro Leagues star and the first black coach in the majors, received it posthumously in 2008, two years after his death.
