Jeter breaks ankle, out for playoffs

A thrilling first game of the American League Championship Series took a horrific turn in the 12th inning, when iconic Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter departed with a fractured left ankle.

After the Yankees' roller-coaster 6-4 loss in 12 innings to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the ALCS, manager Joe Girardi announced that the Yankees captain will miss the rest of the playoffs. Jeter's recovery time is expected to be three months.

"I'm sad for him," Girardi said during his postgame news conference. "I know how much he wants to play. But he would tell us, 'Let's go.' " Girardi added that the injury is not thought to be career-threatening.

Jeter injured the leg while diving for Jhonny Peralta’s ground ball up the middle. Jeter grimaced in pain immediately and flipped the ball toward second baseman Robinson Cano in a failed attempt to record the out.

Jeter was unable to put weight on his left leg afterward and was helped off the field by Yankees head athletic trainer Steve Donohue and Girardi.

In an odd twist, the Yankees wouldn’t have been playing in that inning if not for the latest game-tying home run by October star Raul Ibañez three innings earlier.
