Jeffrey Hammonds hired by MLB players' union

NEW YORK (AP) Former big league outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds has been hired by the Major League Baseball Players Association as special assistant for player program development.

The 42-year-old, an All-Star in 2000, hit .272 with 110 homers and 423 RBIs from 1993-05 with Baltimore, Cincinnati, Colorado, Milwaukee, San Francisco and Washington.

He is the third former player to join the union staff since Tony Clark succeeded Michael Weiner late last year. Hall of Famer Dave Winfield became a special assistant to Clark and pitcher Bob Tewksbury was hired as director of player development.

Hammonds' hiring was announced Thursday.
