Jayson Werth is trying certain practice tactics to get his bat going

Published May. 13, 2015 2:51 a.m. ET

Washington Nationals left fielder Jayson Werth started the season on the disabled list, and he has struggled to get on track since joining the big-league lineup. He has hit mostly third in the lineup, but with only three extra-base hits in 23 games and a .186 batting average, Nationals hitting coach Rich Schu is using a tactic that should get Werth out of his slump.

Schu flips balls underhanded to Werth inside a batting cage that has a smaller fence that sits angled across the left-handed batter’s box and near the plate. The cage gives him less room to swing, which keeps him ‘shorter,’ and is supposed to help him get his rhythm back.

With a shorter and more direct swing, Werth was sending balls into the left field seats during batting practice.
