Jays 3B Lawrie sprains ankle

Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie has left a game against the Atlanta Braves after spraining his left ankle sliding into second on a stolen base.

Lawrie's leg got twisted underneath him as he slid safely into second during the sixth inning Monday night. He immediately asked for time, hopping up and jumping around in pain. Toronto trainer George Poulis came out to check on Lawrie, who initially stayed in the game.

Lawrie was visibly hobbled as he advanced to third on Emilio Bonifacio's grounder, and third base coach Luis Rivera immediately signaled to the dugout for a pinch runner.

Mark DeRosa came on and then replaced Lawrie at third base. The Blue Jays said Lawrie is day to day.

Lawrie went 2 for 3, raising his batting average to .209. He has five homers and 14 RBIs.
