Jason Vargas impressive in simulated game

Jason Vargas made the next step towards his return from the disabled list on Wednesday, as he threw 60 pitches in a simulated game.

The left-hander, who has been out since early June with a left flexor strain, pitched in front of manager Ned Yost, who was encouraged by the outing.

"He's in pretty good shape," Yost told the Kansas City Star.

"The way he was reacting was how he's supposed to; the hitters were reacting the way they were supposed to."

Yost also said that Vargas is scheduled to make a rehab start for Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Monday. He is expected to re-join the Royals' rotation after the All-Star break.

Vargas was 5-2 with a 4.10 ERA before he was sidelined due to injury.
