Injured Chamberlain, Feliciano to throw Saturday

Published Mar. 18, 2011 10:10 p.m. ET

New York left fielder Brett Gardner left Friday's game against Toronto after being thrown out trying to score from second on a third-inning single.

Gardner fouled a ball off his right shin, bruising it, in Thursday night's game, and was not running at full speed in the game with the Blue Jays.

''The clutch was slipping,'' Gardner said jokingly. ''I'm good. I'm not worried about it. Just a little swollen. Just a little bruise.''

Gardner used a shin pad in Friday's game for added protection.

A.J. Burnett, Friday's starter, was hit on the upper part of his right buttock by Juan Rivera's liner in the first. The right-hander said there was initial pain, but added the bruise didn't bother him too much during his four-inning outing.

''It hurt, man,'' Burnett said. ''I never saw it.''

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects Burnett will be ready to make his next start.

''You worry, a little bit, about him getting a little stiff now,'' Girardi said. ''By the time it's his turn, he should be fine.''

Also, injured New York Yankees' pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Pedro Feliciano are scheduled to throw off a bullpen mound on Saturday.

Chamberlain has left-side muscle soreness on his upper body, while Feliciano has discomfort in his left upper arm.

''I don't think any of us really knows until they go out and compete,'' Girardi said. ''You hope they're minor. If the bullpen goes well, it's minor. If the bullpen doesn't go well, it's a little bit more.''

Boone Logan, who along with Feliciano are the two left-hander's in the bullpen, is out with back spasms.

Girardi expects Logan will be out four or five days, and is hopeful all three will be ready for opening day.

Sergio Mitre, scratched from his start Monday night against Boston because of left-side upper-body muscle soreness, allowed two runs - coming on a two-run homer by Mike McCoy - and three hits in three innings out of the bullpen in the Yankees' 6-5 loss.

''Good to go, except for the homer,'' Mitre said.
