Indians call up RHP Gomez, designate INF Hernandez

The Cleveland Indians have called up Jeanmar Gomez from Triple-A Columbus to make his major league debut in a start against the Detroit Tigers.

Veteran infielder Anderson Hernandez was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot Sunday.

Gomez, a 22-year-old right-hander from Venezuela, had a 6-8 record and 5.70 ERA in 18 starts for the Clippers this season. A year ago, he went 10-4 and pitched a perfect game for Akron in the Double-A Eastern League.

Hernandez hi .246 with two RBIs in 22 games for Cleveland.
