Ichiro ties Babe Ruth on all-time hits list
Monday was an eventful day for the Miami Marlins as Dan Jennings took over as manager, which made it easy to overlook a milestone achieved by one of the Marlins' players.
In the fifth inning, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki blooped a single to left field that was laced with historical context.
The hit, Suzuki's second of the game, was No. 2,873 in his career, which tied him with Babe Ruth at 42nd on the all-time hits list.
While the slap-hitting lefty admitted he wasn't thinking of the hit's historical relevance amid the other happenings of the day, he reflected on the feat following the game.
"Obviously, when you think of Babe Ruth, he's a home run hitter," the 41-year-old left fielder said. "I never seen him play, and don't know too much about him. For me, I'm just such a different type of player. I like to get hits and use my legs to get different types of hits and obviously he's hitting home runs.
"So you can't really compare. Obviously, we happen to be on the same number [of hits] right now, but it's tough to compare the two because we're such different types of players."
With another four hits, Ichiro will surpass Mel Ott and tie Omar Vizquel at 2,878 for No. 40 on the all-time hits list.
