Gomez's bat flip hit Mauer

Published May. 22, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Minnesota Twins are giving Carlos Gomez a break for his accidental bat flip that hit former teammate Joe Mauer.

Gomez was celebrating a late home run Friday night that came with Milwaukee trailing 15-0 when he got a little too exuberant.

Mauer revealed before Saturday's game that the bat hit him on the wrist. The AL MVP says he realizes Gomez didn't mean any harm and can get caught up in the moment. But Mauer says Gomez needs to curtail his flamboyance, for his sake and others.

Gomez was apologetic on Friday night and again before Saturday's game. He says it's hard for him to change his style.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire says he respects Gomez's passion and that he doesn't need to apologize.
