Goldschmidt returns from injury, singles for Diamondbacks

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Paul Goldschmidt singled in his first at-bat since breaking his left hand last August, and the Arizona Diamondbacks opened their spring training schedule Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Arizona State.

Arizona's starting lineup featured several regulars, including Goldschmidt. The All-Star first baseman broke his hand when he was hit by a pitch last summer.

''I didn't think about that whatsoever,'' said Goldschmidt, now wearing a padded batting glove to protect his left hand. ''To have some defenders out there and not have the cage around you, it was way more game-like.''

Goldschmidt, second baseman Aaron Hill and center fielder A.J. Pollock were each removed after one inning and one at-bat.

Yasmany Tomas made his Diamondbacks debut at third base and batted seventh. He singled up the middle in the fifth inning and went 1 for 2. Nothing was hit to him at third.

''Everything's good,'' Tomas said in Spanish. ''Baseball is the same in any place. I did my work in the field and all went well.''

The rookie from Cuba signed with Arizona for six years and $68.5 million in the offseason. The Diamondbacks are looking at Tomas at third base and in the outfield.

''With the bat, I thought this was how he'd look. He looked very comfortable, very relaxed,'' new manager Chip Hale said.

The Diamondbacks scored in the fifth when Danny Dorn hit a ground-rule double with the bases loaded to drive in Nick Ahmed and Ender Inciarte.

Ahmed, competing for a spot in the middle infield, played five innings. Inciarte, who played in 118 games last season with the Diamondbacks, replaced Pollock.

Ben Francisco had a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

STARTING TIME

Diamondbacks: LHP Andrew Chafin, not among the main candidates for a spot in the season-opening rotation, allowed a hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Diamondbacks: Jeremy Hellickson threw Tuesday morning and Hale said the right-hander felt no pain on his right side, where he had dealt with cramping. ... Relief pitcher Matt Stites is playing catch as he tries to return from soreness early in camp.

UP NEXT

Diamondbacks: RHP Rubby De La Rosa, acquired in the trade that sent LHP Wade Miley to Boston last December, is the scheduled starter Wednesday in Arizona's first spring training game against a major league team, the Colorado Rockies. RHP Trevor Cahill is slated to start Thursday, also against Colorado. Cahill, a longtime major leaguer, is competing for a starting rotation spot, and Hale said if Cahill continues to throw the way he has thus far in camp, he will be among the five starters.

Diamondbacks catcher Tuffy Gosewisch was an Arizona State standout. ... A digital clock was installed below the left field scoreboard at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, the Diamondbacks' spring training home. It ticked down from 2 minutes, 25 seconds, beginning with the final out of each half-inning and approached zero as the first hitter of the next half-inning stepped into the batter's box, as part of Major League Baseball's new pace of play rules. ... A foul ball off the bat of Arizona State's Brian Serven knocked a fan's beverage off a patio in the second deck above home plate. Her shriek was heard throughout the ballpark as the liquid splashed all over fans seated below.

IN MEMORIUM

The Diamondbacks wore red jerseys with a black patch stitched on the sleeves that had the name ''KAYLA'' on it. The patch is in memory of Arizona native Kayla Mueller, a human rights activist killed last month while being held captive in Syria.
