Giants activate Romo, option Suarez, DFA Broadway
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) San Francisco right-hander Sergio Romo was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list on Monday after being sidelined since April 11 with an elbow injury.
The 33-year-old setup man had pitched only four times this season for the Giants. Romo pitched 11 games in rehab assignments for Triple-A Sacramento and Single-A San Jose.
Manager Bruce Bochy said, ''it's been a long road for him.''
Romo has played for the Giants on their three most recent World Series championship teams. He was the closer during their 2012 title run.
Bochy hoped to use Romo once in a non-pressure situation before moving him into his regular eighth-inning role. Right-hander Albert Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento and right-hander Mike Broadway was designated for assignment.
Suarez (3-1, 3.72 ERA) in 12 appearances with the Giants, had six starts in his first call-up to the majors.
Broadway had an 11.81 ERA in four appearances.
