Garvey adds Orel Hershiser to his team
Steve Garvey has added Orel Hershiser to the group he's assembling with the goal of buying a professional sports franchise, possibly the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The two former Dodgers stars have joined forces under the banner of the Garvey-Hershiser Group.
Garvey said this week that Hershiser not only is a baseball expert, but he's an astute businessman, and that's the kind of person Garvey wants to bring on board.
''Orel fits perfectly with everybody,'' said Garvey, adding that his group is comprised of five people.
Hershiser, the 1988 World Series MVP with the Dodgers, declined comment through ESPN, where he works as a baseball analyst.
Garvey said he's been pursuing a sports franchise for two years now, and has considered minor league clubs and professional soccer teams.
''It's about satisfying the fans with a great product on the court or on the field, making a safe, entertaining environment. We're in the memory business,'' he said.
The Dodgers aren't for sale, although Major League Baseball is running the team's day-to-day business operations while looking into the club's finances under owner Frank McCourt.
''All we know is it's between MLB, the commissioner and the McCourts,'' Garvey said. ''We just have to wait and look and listen.''
Garvey said he feels ''genuinely sorry'' about the turmoil surrounding the team he followed as a child and then later starred for.
''Who would have ever anticipated this? It's sad for all of us,'' he said. ''It will come back, I have no doubts about that.''
