For the 2016 Mets, Ya Gotta Believe

Ya Gotta Believe. These three words ring too true for the Mets 2016 season.

Who would’ve thought the Mets would be playing in the postseason? Well, if asked in the offseason or the beginning of the season (or the second Cespedes was re-signed), we all would’ve said duh. There’s unfinished business to take care of.

And then the injuries started.

David Wright. We thought we’d have our captain back and taking part in the fun this season. Nope, unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

We were all convinced Zack Wheeler would be joining our perfect starting rotation, in turn sending Bartolo Colon to the bullpen. Nope, unfortunately Wheeler still has yet to make his return, but fortunately Colon has stayed healthy — or mostly healthy minus this minor injury — and has stayed in our rotation.

Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, and Steven Matz weren’t so lucky. Even Noah Syndergaard had to have a couple of starts missed because of bone spurs and strep throat. Oh — and silly me forgetting to mention Jon Niese as well.

Lucas Duda missed a majority of the season. Juan Lagares was out for quite a while. So was Travis d’Arnaud. We also can’t forget that Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera each had time on the DL as well. Neil Walker and Wilmer Flores are out for the season.

Yes, that’s a lot of players.

But despite all this, the Mets clinched the Wild Card. They are playing in the postseason. They still have a chance to finish their unfinished business.

I am normally not one to think much of the Wild Card game. There, I said it. I’m sure many of you agree with me to be honest. But man, this team, overcoming all of these losses — including the loss of their captain for the majority of the season — and making their way into the postseason is just amazin’.

If you asked me back in mid-August if I thought the Mets were going to the postseason, or had a chance to make it to the World Series, I probably would’ve said no. But this team since then has shown they want this. They want to win.

This team has shown their resiliency. They’ve shown their character. They showed the world that you can’t just count them out. Now let’s go win.
