For Padres' Derek Norris, on-deck routine all about timing

Published May. 31, 2015 7:15 p.m. ET

Every baseball player has a routine which gets him ready for the game. U-T San Diego describes an unusual on-deck routine for Padres catcher Derek Norris:

As the pitcher delivers the pitch, he then appears to time his swing accordingly, but stops short. Norris explained his technique to the U-T:

"It’s to sync up with the guy on the mound, it’s to get my timing," Norris said. "It’s not anything complex. It’s just me trying to get my leg kick in sync with his leg kick and trying to be on time.”

Norris seems to have gotten his timing down just right as he was an All-Star last season and is once again All-Star-worthy this season leading NL catchers in multiple  offensive categories.
