Fernandez strikes out 11 as Marlins defeat Nationals 5-1


WASHINGTON (AP) Jose Fernandez struck out 11 over seven innings and drove in two runs during a three-run sixth to help the Miami Marlins defeat the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Sunday.
Giancarlo Stanton hit his 11th home run as Miami salvaged a four-game split. He also survived an outfield collision with Marcell Ozuna that led to Ryan Zimmerman's inside-the-park home run for Washington.
J.T. Realmuto singled three times and scored twice for the Marlins, who took a 2-0 lead on an error by Nationals second baseman Stephen Drew.
A.J. Ramos came on in the ninth for his 11th save.
Nationals starter Joe Ross (3-3) allowed five runs - three earned - over 5 2/3 innings.
Fernandez (5-2) threw a career-high 117 pitches while allowing the one run on four hits and three walks.
