Dodgers manager Mattingly reacts to firing of Padres' Black

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he was surprised regarding the news about the firing of Padres manager Bud Black. Mattingly’s Dodgers had just beaten the Padres on Sunday to take two of three games in a weekend series in San Diego. According to the Orange County Register, Mattingly said:

“It surprises me with Buddy. I think we all understand how it is and how it works. It still surprises me. Buddy's a really great guy and a great manager."

Black’s firing means Mattingly is now tied with a couple of other managers as the second-longest tenured National League manager behind the Giants’ Bruce Bochy. Mattingly as well as the Pirates’ Clint Hurdle and the Mets’ Terry Collins all began their tenures in 2011.
