Recent Cuban-born signee Hector Olivera introduced himself to Dodgers manager Don Mattingly recently. With the Dodgers in Arizona and Olivera rehabbing his strained hamstring at the Dodgers’ facilities in Arizona, it was an ideal opportunity.
According to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick, Mattingly learned a bit about Cuban baseball from Olivera. Per Gurnick, Mattingly said:
"I asked him why all the Cuban players hit the other way…He said if you play on the national team there, at a young age they teach you to hit the other way.”

Mattingly said that he liked that approach. Olivera had been hitting .387 in seven games with Triple A before going on the disabled list.
