Dodgers beat Rockies 2-1 in rain-shortened game

Published May. 9, 2015 1:26 a.m. ET

DENVER (AP) Brett Anderson brushed aside the elements to put together another winning outing.

Anderson pitched five solid innings, Adrian Gonzalez had an RBI double and threw out a baserunner at home, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Friday night in a game called in the top of the sixth inning because of rain.

''You can't really think about that because then you're hesitant and you're just going to end up hurting yourself more so than without that mindset,'' Anderson said. ''I just got to go out there and try and get people out and do my best. And fortunately in weird circumstances, I was able to pitch pretty good and get us a win.''

Rainy weather delayed the start for 64 minutes, and with one out and the bases loaded against Eddie Butler in the Dodgers' half of the sixth, the game was halted again amid another pelting rain. An hour and 40 minutes later, umpires called it and the Rockies were left with their season high eighth straight loss. The Dodgers have won their last seven games against Colorado dating to Sept. 26.

Anderson (2-1) allowed an unearned run and six hits in his first appearance against his former team. He spent last season with the Rockies but was limited to eight starts due to injury. He was coming off his best outing as a Dodger, pitching six scoreless innings in a win over Arizona on Sunday and he made timely pitches when he had to against the Rockies.

''I was able to get some big double plays and minimize the damage,'' said Anderson, who ended the first and third innings with double-play grounders.

Butler (2-3) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings. He walked four and struck out three.

Butler walked two of the first three batters he faced and both wound up scoring on Gonzalez's ground-rule double and a sacrifice fly by Yasmani Grandal, who drove in a career-best eight runs the night before in a win at Milwaukee.

''I hadn't quite gotten a feel for it,'' Butler said. ''The ball was moving more than it normally does. (Later), I was staying behind the ball a little bit better, getting a little extra movement to it. I started feeling it out and I started to get back in a zone, and get guys to swing.''

Troy Tulowitzi doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and left fielder Alex Guerrero bobbled Nolan Arenado's single for an error, allowing Tulowitzki to score just ahead of the throw home.

The Rockies were denied the tying run when Charlie Blackmon was thrown out at home by first baseman Gonzalez to end the fifth after trying to score from second on Corey Dickerson's infield single. The close play was upheld on replay review.

''Obviously, he's got to try and make that play,'' Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. ''You never know what happens that inning, if that thing gets extended. This is a weird day. Sounds like they've been having a weird week, listening to Walt.''

Colorado's Nick Hundley had a second-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Earlier, the Rockies optioned left-hander Tyler Matzek to Triple-A Albuquerque, and recalled catcher-first baseman Wilin Rosario. Matzek has struggled with his control early in the season, particularly in his last start against Arizona on Wednesday, when he pitched two innings and gave up four runs, three hits and six walks. Manager Walt Weiss said the Rockies were still considering their options for a replacement in the rotation.

RIGHT STUFF

Jameson Axford, the 2-year-old son of Rockies' closer John Axford, is still recovering from rattlesnake bites to his right foot two months ago while the family was in Arizona for spring training. But he displayed a smiling face and a strong arm in throwing out the ceremonial first pitch from his wheelchair, with his 3-year-old brother, J.B., and his father on the receiving end just in front of home plate.

TRAINER'S ROOM

He left a game at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday after apparently tweaking his hamstring, the Dodgers said. ... Pitcher Kenley Jansen, who has been sidelined since the start of the season because of foot surgery, is expected to make his third and fourth rehab appearances this weekend with Rancho Cucamonga.

Rockies: Closer Adam Ottavino is recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Ottavino had his ulnar collateral ligament reconstructed by Dr. James Andrews on Thursday in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He will miss the rest of the season.

UP NEXT
