Despite Kubitza's rough debut, Scioscia confident he'll bounce back
The hamstring issue facing Los Angeles Angels third baseman David Freese forced the Halos to make a roster move prior to Wednesday's game with the Tampa Bay Rays - so they designated outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment (as per Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register).
The DFA came as a maneuver to free up a roster spot for Kyle Kubitza, a third baseman promoted from Triple-A in time for Wednesday's game.
Kubita's Angels debut wasn't especially memorable (in a good way), as the rookie made a few mistakes on defense and on the bases. Despite his hiccups, he did collect his first two big-league base hits.
Overall, his debut prompted manager Mike Scioscia to express faith in his ability to forge ahead, telling Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register that, "Kyle will bounce back. This guy has a chance to be a really good player.”
